Thanks for your comments! Yes, the MJO had been relatively quiet this winter until this event started in Mid-January. Low-frequency forcing from the remnant La Nina and higher latitude features seemed to be driving the first half.
2015 was a very good year for MJOs. Not only the March event you mention, but also high amplitude event in June/July. The westerly wind bursts associated with that one led to some of the peak warming of the recent El Nino event. It also spawned almost 11 tropical cyclones as it circled the globe.
As you say, it will be very interesting to see how these features evolve!
